I’d love to get others experiences with reflux. My first spat up a lot with was a generally happy baby so we never even thought about trying to treat reflux.
My second is extremely unsettled baby, also spits up often but I have no idea whether the spitting up is actually causing any of the crying or it’s something else. She doesn’t seem to get particularly upset at the time of actually spitting up so it seems to me it’s possibly more trapped wind or something else that is causing what seems like extreme discomfort but I don’t know whether it’s worth considering reflux further… any advice welcome.

Spitting up regularly but bothered by it, gulping randomly and wincing with it, irritable for no apparent reason. The only way to diagnose it is to treat it and if it makes a difference then it’s reflux. If its not reflux then it won’t make a difference to the symptoms

@Mama2b30,
thank you. Might talk to gp & look at treating to see if there’s an improvement.

I’m in a similar situation right now with my second baby, she’s almost 7 weeks old. She spits up soooo much. Like after almost every feed. She’s combi fed and it happens with both breast feeds and formula feeds. We’re trialling a new formula this week just to see if it makes any difference at all. She’s pretty content for most of the day, a bit of crying here and there but come evening time she can be so upset. I don’t know if it’s a build up of trapped wind from throughout the day or if it is pain from reflux. When she’s upset in the evenings she can get very rigid and red in the face! We have our 6 week appointment with the gp this week so will be discussing it with her.

My first used to literally scream in pain, arch her back & I would hear her swallowing and swallowing while crying, it was just awful. She used to also try and put her little fist into her mouth when screaming and apparently this is to ease the burning feeling.
My second also suffers with reflux, she always seems to have clear liquid spilling from her mouth, she hiccups a lot and has very wet sound wind but is not fussed. She is on a dairy free formula which made the world of difference to her and while she has reflux she doesn't seem bothered or upset by it. I was told by a paediatrician that spitting up, hiccuping, swallowing etc is all fine as long as baby is content and sleep isn't disturbed.

@F8T7M,
thanks for your reply. I’ve got the spitting up, hiccuping, swallowing, etc plus the screaming baby who seems in pain, but just can’t tell if they’re related.
She’s not normally screaming at the time of the spitting up, seems to come before or after ♀️
I’m BF and have recently cut out dairy to see if it makes any difference

My newborns had silent reflux and from 2 weeks old they couldn't sleep in any position, including slings and being held, for more than about 15/20 mins at a time, they would gulp and jerk awake suddenly and couldn't go back asleep. I could hear little gulps randomly while they were awake too. The crying was a mixture of pain and overtiredness. The osteopath actually cried when I brought my daughter there at about 6 weeks old, she had only slept in total about 40 mins that day broken up and she was shook from tiredness on top of everything else. This was around 5pm and she had been up for the day since around 6am. We changed to nannycare formula at 10 weeks and it changed everything for us. This was after cycling through all the prescription formulas to see if it was an allergy etc. The osteopath also helped massively and I'm still not 100% sure which worked most but she was also twisted very much to her right side constantly and after 3 sessions with the osteopaths she slept straight and comfortable on her back all night straight through. I think we changed formula the next day and saw even more improvements in that she literally went from crying all the time to hardly ever in the space of 2 days. It's all such a blur but the combo of both worked wonders here. My first baby's issue was 100% caused by tongue tie that was undiagnosed until 7 months. I am having severe desperate troubleshooting flashbacks here! I hope your LO settles soon. Maybe your baby also has silent reflux (basically heartburn) so the crying isn't exactly matching up with the visible spew? Or you could be right, could be wind. My second had a problem with both (and mucus nappies). I think the osteopath helped the reflux and the goats milk formula helped the digestive issues. I couldn't believe how much she burped from 10 weeks on, all I could think of was "wow that must have been painful holding on to all that wind" previously when she was all knotted up and couldn't release it. Just one word of advice, if you do suspect reflux avoid infacol for wind until reflux is ruled out. It's flavouring is acidic and that makes reflux more painful. Found that out the hard way myself. Dentinox is an alternative, minty flavour and makes the bottles taste rank but my two would drink anything up to about 12 weeks and only then became pernickety with flavours.

@OwlCat1,
thanks a million for sharing your experience, it’s really helpful. Yes we thought she had silent reflux v early & treated it and she seemed to improve but then we thought the improvement might have been for other reasons & we also had a tongue tie diagnosis so we got that sorted and took her off the losec but I’m considering asking gp to assess putting her back on it as things seem to have gotten a lot worse again.

My second used to scream, arch her back for hours. Tried everything the gp recommended infacol, etc. ended up bringing her to a man in carrickmacross for the cure. He had the cure for colic and reflux. 3 days in a row you bring them. And he recommended I’d put her on cow and gate. I never looked back. Raging I didn’t bring her sooner
