VPN Unlimited Review 2024: What Is It Good For? (2024)

VPN Unlimited is a secure VPN with great streaming support. It has a large server network, works in China and on restricted networks, and its user-friendly apps are ideal for beginners.

It protects your online security and privacy with industry-standard features like 256-bit AES encryption, a kill switch, and a no-logs policy. It also has split-tunneling but only on Android devices.

However, it’s a pretty bare-bones VPN. It doesn’t have advanced security features, it temporarily logs some data, and its torrenting support is very limited. Plus, you get slow speeds on distant servers, and there’s no 24/7 live chat.

There are better VPNs out there that offer much more, like ExpressVPN, which comes with advanced security, fast speeds on all servers, and lots of extra features for convenience on top of everything VPN Unlimited offers.

VPN Unlimited offers a yearly and a lifetime plan. You get a 7-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee, no matter which plan you pick. The VPN also comes bundled with a DNS firewall, a Smart DNS, an authenticator app, and a password manager in a slightly more expensive subscription package (MonoDefense).

VPN Unlimited Review 2024: What Is It Good For? (1)

I spent a couple of weeks testing VPN Unlimited to see how it compares to the top VPNs on the market. I like that it accesses all of the top streaming sites, works in China, bypasses VPN blocks on restricted networks (like at a school), offers a decent server network, and comes with good security and privacy features.

However, it’s a very basic VPN. There are no advanced security features, its P2P support isn’t great, it’s slow when you connect to very distant servers, and it’s missing a live chat.

Overall, VPN Unlimited is a good pick if you’re looking for a bare-bones VPN for browsing and streaming, but other VPNs on the market provide much better value.

VPN Unlimited Features

VPN Unlimited comes with industry-standard VPN security features, including:

  • 256-bit AES encryption — VPN Unlimited uses the same encryption used by banks and governments to protect your data.
  • No-logs policy — VPN Unlimited doesn’t permanentlylog your personal data, browsing activity, and files you download.
  • Kill switch — If your VPN connection drops, a kill switch will disconnect your internet connection to prevent any leaks. The kill switch is available on Android 8 and higher, iOS, Windows, and macOS devices. But I don’t like how you get a kill switch on iOS and macOS only with the IKEv2 protocol.

VPN Unlimited automatically chooses the best VPN protocol for your network, but if you want to tweak your settings, there are plenty of options. You can use OpenVPN, WireGuard, and IKEv2/IPSec with VPN Unlimited — IPSec is available on iOS and macOS for older OS versions.

I really like how it has its own proprietary protocol, called KeepSolid Wise, which is built on the OpenVPN protocol and uses TCP (for reliable data transfer), UDP (for faster data transfer), and TLS (for secure connections). This protocol makes your VPN traffic appear like regular internet activity and allows you to bypass censorship in restrictive countries and on restricted networks.

I ran leak tests while connected to 10+ VPN Unlimited’s server locations to make sure it works as advertised, and I never experienced any leaks. VPN unlimitedroutes all of your traffic through its own DNS servers, which protects you from any DNS leaks. However, there’s no built-in WebRTC protection — to get that from Unlimited VPN, you’ll have to install the browser extension. You’ll also have to disable all IPv6 traffic to protect yourself from IPv6 leaks. This is easy to do, but it’s extra work considering VPNs like ExpressVPN and Private Internet Accessoffer full built-in leak protection.

VPN Unlimited also offers a split-tunneling feature but only on Android — it lets you choose which apps go outside of your VPN tunnel and which use your regular connection. This is handy for apps that need your real location, like Google Maps or a food delivery service. Honestly, I prefer Private Internet Access’s split-tunneling feature because it split-tunnels both apps and sites, and it works with Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux.

That’s pretty much all you get with the VPN in terms of security and extra features. The VPN lacks advanced security features like RAM-only servers and perfect forward secrecy, unlike top VPNs such as ExpressVPN.

But, for an extra fee, you can also get:

  • Dedicated IP address — An IP address is only assigned to you. With a dedicated IP address, you’ll have benefits like avoiding repetitive reCAPTCHAs. These tests are used by websites to confirm that you’re not a bot, and they can block you if they detect that you’re using a VPN’s shared IP address. VPN Unlimited offers dedicated IP addresses for Canada, the Netherlands, the US, and the UK. My colleague in the US said that he was able to access his bank account with VPN Unlimited’s dedicated IP address. That said, NordVPNoffers dedicated IP addresses in 10+ countries, and they’re much cheaper than VPN Unlimited’s.
  • Personal server — A personal server is dedicated to you only, so you’ll get faster speeds. Plus, all personal server subscriptions include a free VPN subscription. It also includes a personal IP in the country you select and router support, so you can connect all your devices to the VPN. There are personal servers in the US, Europe, and Asia. My colleague from the US experienced no slowdowns when connected to a personal server in New York.

You can get more by purchasing MonoDefense, which includes the VPN plus:

  • DNS Firewall — Blocks malicious domains and traffic, phishing sites, and suspicious pop-up ads. It blocks several types of websites, too (like gambling or adult sites), and lets you create custom blacklists. It’s available on Android, iOS, Windows, and macOS. Private Internet Access similarly blocks ads, trackers, and malicious sites with PIA MACE, which is included in the VPN.
  • Passwarden — A secure password manager that keeps your passwords in one location secured with a master password. It comes with some valuable extras like a password generator, an auto-fill function, and secure password storage. It also offers advanced features like dark web monitoring and Duress Mode. However, the auto-fill feature worked for logins but fails to fill in information on online payment forms, and password sharing is only possible with other Passwarden account holders. While it’s not as good as a top-flight password manager like 1Password, Passwarden is a good basic option that’s included with the VPN. It’s also worth noting that ExpressVPN includes a password manager for free with all subscriptions.
  • Authenticator — Allows for 2FA to protect all of your online accounts. It sends an additionally generated code to the app required to log in to any of your accounts. It’s a nice addition, but you can get two-factor authentication for free with lots of really good password managers.

VPN Unlimited Privacy & Security

Technically, VPN Unlimited has a no-logs policy, but it collects and logs some information, including your IP address and geographical location for the duration of your VPN session. The provider says it only logs this information to determine the fastest server for you and deletes it after your VPN session ends. It also stores device information like the device name, operating system, and app usage to identify the device, enforce maximum device limits, and carry out its support. It’s a good policy, but ExpressVPNcollects a lot less information.

I also don’t like that itsno-logs policy hasn’t been independently audited. This would make it easier to trust the VPN provider’s promises. Plus, all top VPNs like ExpressVPN andPrivate Internet Access have had their no-logs policies audited by third parties multiple times.

VPN Unlimited Review 2024: What Is It Good For? (4)

VPN Unlimited is headquartered in the US, which is a member of the 5/9/14 Eyes Alliances, a group of countries that share security data. This means that it will hand over any personal information it has (which it keeps for a minimum of 7 years, per its privacy policy) in case a government requests it. It shouldn’t have anything to share, considering it has a no-logs policy, but it’s never been audited, so it’s not easy to trust it.

Overall, VPN Unlimited has a no-logs policy, but it does log some information it needs for operation, including your IP address, albeit temporarily. It’s based in a 5/9/14 Eyes Alliance member country, and its no-logs policy has never been independently audited, making it harder to trust it.

VPN Unlimited Speed & Performance

I ran speed tests on my Windows PC on servers in all 80+ locations where VPN Unlimited has a server. I experienced the fastest speeds when connected to a nearby server (in North Macedonia), but there was asignificant drop in speeds when I connected to distant servers in countries like Australia and Japan.

First, I ran a speed test without a VPN connection to determine my internet speeds:

VPN Unlimited Review 2024: What Is It Good For? (5)

Then, I clicked on the optimal server button, and I was connected to the nearest server to my location.

Finally, I connected to a distant server in Australia. Here are my speeds:

VPN Unlimited Review 2024: What Is It Good For? (6)

When I connected to a nearby VPN server, my speeds dropped by about 44%. That said, sites loaded instantly, but I experienced buffering when I tried to load HD videos.

When I connected to a distant server in Australia, my speeds dropped by 85%. Sites took 2–3 seconds to load, and there were 5-second interruptions when I was trying to watch HD videos.

Overall, VPN Unlimited slowed down my speeds by as much as 85% — a top VPN like ExpressVPNis able to maintain fast speeds across all servers. That said, websites still loaded quickly, but videos played with some interruptions.

VPN Unlimited Servers & IP Addresses

VPN Unlimited has 3,000+ servers in 50+ countries — so you’ll easily be able to connect to a fast nearby server no matter where you live. The server network is less than ExpressVPN and CyberGhost VPN, which have servers in 100+ countries. However, VPN Unlimited’s server network is larger than TunnelBear, which has servers in 47 countries.

The provider has dedicated servers for streaming and torrenting. It has 10 streaming servers that are optimized for specific streaming sites, like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and more. VPN Unlimited offers 3 P2P-optimized server locations in Canada, France, and Romania, which is pretty underwhelming considering VPNs like Private Internet Accessallow P2P traffic on all servers.

I think it’s great that VPN Unlimited offers obfuscation on all servers, too. This allows it to get around restrictions that governments employ to limit what you can and can’t access online. VPN Unlimited works in China, too, which has some of the toughest restrictions set in place, and it has 6 optimized regions it recommends for users that want access to the free internet from there: the US, UK, Germany, Singapore, Hong Kong, and India. I like this selection because there’s a nearby server to connect to for fast speeds.

VPN Unlimited offers dedicated IPs in 3 different locations for an extra cost, including Canada, the Netherlands, and the UK.

Overall, VPN Unlimited has a solid server network, comes with dedicated servers for streaming and torrenting, and offers dedicated IP addresses.

VPN Unlimited Streaming & Torrenting

VPN Unlimited is excellent for streaming. It can access all top streaming sites, including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, and Max through its streaming-optimized servers. It also has dedicated streaming servers for Popcornflix, Sony Crackle, Rai.tv, and Disney+.

Although I’m pretty happy with VPN Unlimited’s streaming support, I still prefer ExpressVPN, which works with 100+ streaming services and maintains the fastest speeds on the market — and you don’t have to connect to a dedicated streaming server.

You can also stream on devices that don’t have a VPN app, like your smart TV or gaming console, but this feature is only included with the more expensive plan (MonoDefense).

VPN Unlimited Review 2024: What Is It Good For? (7)

It’s awful for torrenting, though — it has only 3 P2P-optimized server locations. Most users won’t be able to connect to a nearby server for the best possible speeds — for comparison, ExpressVPNand Private Internet Accessallow torrenting on all of their servers and have faster download speeds.

The VPN also has a SOCKS5 proxy, which changes your IP address but doesn’t use encryption, so it provides significantly faster download speeds. However, I don’t like how you’re limited to just 3 server locations: the US, the Netherlands, and Singapore.

VPN Unlimited offers decent security for sharing P2P traffic, including DNS leak protection, though I would like to see it add built-in WebRTC leak protection. That said, I ran leak tests on P2P servers in 5+ countries before downloading any torrents, and I didn’t experience any leaks.

VPN Unlimited Plans & Pricing

VPN Unlimited has yearly and lifetime plansthat start as low as $5.00 / month. Both plans give you access to all VPN features, but it’s slightly disappointing that there’s no monthly plan for anyone who doesn’t want to commit to a long-term plan right away.

You can also get an annual or a lifetime subscription to MonoDefense, which adds a password manager, a DNS Firewall, an authenticator tool for TFA-protected accounts, and a smart DNS tool. The annual subscription costs $5.00 / month extra, while the lifetime subscription comes at $199.99.

However, I still feel that top VPNs like ExpressVPN and Surfsharkoffer better value overall, because they come with a lot of these extra features as part of the VPN subscription, and you don’t have to install additional apps to get the benefits.

All plans have a 30-day money-back guarantee. You can purchase a subscription with a credit/debit card, cryptocurrency, PayPal, Amazon Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Microsoft Pay.

VPN Unlimited Ease of Use: Mobile & Desktop Apps

VPN Unlimited Review 2024: What Is It Good For? (8)

VPN Unlimited has easy-to-use apps for Android, Windows, macOS, iOS, and Linux. It also has browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Edge, which include WebRTC protection. Moreover, the VPN supports manual router setups (though I’d choose one of the VPNs on this list that have better router support).

Every app has the same interface and offers pretty much the same features (the Android app includes split-tunneling). It’s also worth noting that the kill switch on iOS and macOS is only available if you’re on the IKEv2 protocol, which is very limiting.

All options are neatly organized, so you won’t have to spend too much time in the app to find something specific. Its streaming-optimized servers are kept in a separate tab, and its P2P servers are well-marked. While there’s a separate tab for the torrenting-optimized servers on mobile, it’s not offered on desktop — this isn’t a big deal since there are only 3 P2P servers.

It’s great that you can mark servers as favorites on both desktop and mobile — these servers are also kept in a separate tab! Plus, VPN Unlimited shows each server’s ping level, so you can easily find the fastest one for you in a specific location, and there’s even a ping test on all apps.

Overall, VPN Unlimited has intuitive apps for nearly all major devices. Its apps are easy to use, but the split-tunneling feature is only included on Android devices.

VPN Unlimited Customer Support

VPN Unlimited Review 2024: What Is It Good For? (9)

VPN Unlimited offers several channels for customer support. It has email support, troubleshooting guides, set-up tutorials, and FAQs, but there’s no live chat.

I sent emails at different times of the day, and it took from 6 minutes to 12 hours to receive a response. The slow response time was only for emails sent late at night. That said, every response I received was knowledgeable, so I didn’t have to send follow-up questions.

VPN Unlimited Review 2024: What Is It Good For? (10)

The VPN offers helpful support through FAQs, setup tutorials, and general troubleshooting topics. It also provides instructions for installing VPN Unlimited on different devices and in-depth explanations about the VPN’s features. In all honesty, I barely had any need to talk to its customer support agents, and I especially appreciate that all information is up to date.

Overall, VPN Unlimited customer support is decent — It offers email support, FAQs, common troubleshooting issues, setup guides for all devices, and explanations about its features. However, it lacks live chat, and the email response time can be slow during late hours.

Is VPN Unlimited Worth the Cost?

VPN Unlimited is a pretty good VPN. It’s got good streaming support, works in China and on restricted networks like at school and work, its server network is decent, and its apps are intuitive.

It comes with industry-standard security features, including 256-bit AES encryption, a kill switch, and a no-logs policy, and it offers some extra features, such as split-tunneling, but only on the Android app.

However, VPN Unlimited lacks advanced security features and temporarily logs data. It also causes noticeable slowdowns on distant servers, only allows torrenting on 3 server locations, and doesn’t have a live chat.

VPN Unlimited offers 2 plans and a 7-day free trial. Plus, all plans have a 30-day money-back guarantee.
