I did some work for Lime scooters' expansion into my home city pre-COVID, and it's incredible to see how the micro-mobility landscape has evolved since then.Pre-pandemic, companies like Lime and Bird were rapidly deploying fleets of electric scooters across cities worldwide, offering a new, convenient mode of transportation. The pandemic initially slowed growth due to lockdowns and reduced travel, but it also catalyzed a shift in urban mobility trends that has significantly benefited the micro-mobility sector. In recent years, there has been a remarkable resurgence and expansion in the micro-mobility market. Cities have increasingly recognized the value of micro-mobility in reducing traffic congestion and lowering carbon emissions. Investments in infrastructure, such as dedicated bike lanes and scooter parking zones, have enhanced safety and accessibility, encouraging more people to adopt these modes of transport. An interesting development within this sector is the increased use of electric bikes for home delivery of food. Companies like Uber Eats, DoorDash, and Deliveroo have integrated electric bikes into their delivery fleets to meet the rising demand for quick and efficient food delivery services. Electric bikes offer a faster and more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional delivery methods, reducing delivery times and operational costs. This shift is driven by the need for sustainable and scalable solutions in the booming food delivery industry, which saw exponential growth during the pandemic.Global leaders like Lime, Bird, and European counterparts Voi and Tier Mobility have seen substantial growth. Lime, for instance, has diversified its fleet to include electric bikes, broadening its appeal. Meanwhile, companies in Asia, such as Didi Chuxing and Grab, have integrated scooters and bikes into their platforms, offering users seamless multi-modal transport options. This expansion is backed by significant capital influx, with companies raising billions to scale operations and innovate. The sector's growth is also driven by advancements in battery technology, improving range and reducing costs, and by regulatory frameworks that increasingly favor sustainable urban transport solutions. As cities continue to prioritize eco-friendly mobility and the food delivery industry embraces electric bikes, the micro-mobility sector is poised for sustained growth, transforming urban transportation and delivery services in the process.—Follow me (Preston Junger) for more 📈 GTM, 💻 tech, 💼 investment, ☕️ hospitality, 🥍 health/sports, and 📊 business/life content
