Ellinger to attend legislative session Rory Ellinger, Democratic candidate for District 111 state representative, has been invited by several state legislators to attend a special session of the legislature which convenes today. The session, called by Gov.

Warren E. creased appropriations core the University of Hearnes, is primarily concerned with inMissouri, an issue that Ellinger has emphasized in his campaign. Ellinger said he hoped to talk with several legislators about increasing funds for the Columbia campus. He said he had spoken with "key university personnel," including University President C. Brice Ratchford and his special assistant Stirling Kyd, and that his work in Jefferson City was secondary to theirs.

"I am not the university lobbyist and I don't want to give that impression," Ellinger said, "but several members of the legislature who are friends of mine are interested in the views of the potential state representative from the city where the main campus of the university is located." In addition to university funding, Ellinger said he would discuss the need for the state to appropriate money to pay for the public defender system which passed recently. Bryant pleads 'not guilty' to 4 felonies Ronald Dean "Tiny" Bryant, 28, Hallsville, pleaded not guilty to four felony charges in Boone County Circuit Court this morning. A trial date is to be set soon. Bryant was bound over to Circuit Court Aug. 24 at the conclusion of a day-long series of preliminary hearings on the charges, three for burglary and stealing and one for stealing.

The state's chief witness was Billy Joe Wyatte, a self- confessed accomplice who told the court he had participated with Bryant in all four incidents. The directory was torn out of its folder from the telephone office building and thrown on top of the Bagby Drug Store; the window of the telephone booth was broken and a piece of the receiver taken out; the wooden sign in front of the Markland Antique Shop was torn in half and thrown on top of the drug store; and a padlock on a door leading to an upstairs storage room in the Antique shop was broken. "It's really terrible that such a thing could happen in a small town like this," said Mrs. Robert Bagby, the wife of the owner of the Bagby Drug Store. Deputy Roy Werner, of the Howard County Sheriff's office, who is working on the case, was unavailable for comment.

But Sheriff Archie Walker said the culprits "could have been any of 50 kids." Walker said only the destruction of the flag pole rope had been reported and that he did not know of the other damage. Shooting brings 20-year sentence Dennis Johnson, 23, Wichita, was sentenced to 20 years in the Missouri penitentiary this morning for a felonious assault on his girlfriend last April. Johnson was charged with assault with intent to kill after his traveling companion, Miss Michelle Jiggetts, was found on a secluded country road near Rocheport April 18. Doctors later removed two bullets, one from her chest and another from her arm. Circuit Judge Frank Conley admonished Johnson this morning that crimes involving firearms were among those prompting increased social concern.

As Conley sentenced Johnson, Bailiff Eddie Goodwin stepped forward and snapped handcuffs on the young man's wrists. Johnson requested a trial and waived his right to a jury earlier this summer. On July 5, Conley found him guilty of the capital offense at the conclusion of a brief trial in which Miss Jiggetts testified that Johnson had shot her and dumped her from his car. Johnson would not allow his attorney, David Bear III, to crossexamine any of the state's witnesses, or to present any defense. Johnson was allowed credit for the 141 days he has been confined in Boone County Jail since his arrest.

Bear said that no appeal motions would be filed at this point.
